The transformation of a Chelsea Home

It’s not every day you get to work on an iconic building. But a little while ago we found ourselves working on a full home renovation in a building that was once owned by the founder of Harrods, the famous London department store. It’s still one of my favourite projects to date—it was challenging, we were able to get creative with the design, and the results were stunning.

The project

The building has been divided into separate flats and the owners of the apartment we were working on were living on the second floor, with the flat above also belonging to them. We were tasked with completing a full home renovation, alongside esteemed Italian architect Elisabetta Pincherle.

Elisabetta designed a stunning space, with the top flat divided into four bedrooms and four bathrooms. The four-storey building has windows on three sides so the light became a huge feature of the final home.

The challenges

The building dates back to 1890, which in itself presents challenges. Preserving the original internal structure was really important and so we had to carefully manage all of the contractors and specialists working on the project to ensure great care was taken.

The architect was based in Italy, so our team was responsible for full project management, liaising with the homeowners and the architect to keep things running smoothly. We worked with Italian cabinet makers, brass specialists to create a beautiful kitchen island, and flooring specialists to provide a 4m plank Dinesden wooden floor, as well as marble, lighting, window, and door specialists.

A lot of people to manage but we like a challenge.

The result

The final result is simply stunning. The home is spacious and light, a mix of easy-going and formal. It’s a space where the family can host friends for lunches and dinners but allow their children to enjoy the spaces every day.

After a long and complex project with vast structural and aesthetic changes, the result is a functional home where the owners can still impress family and friends. It’s something we are incredibly proud to have worked on.
